Ashfaque (Ajay Devgan) comes from a small town aspiring to become an actor in the Hindi film industry. He stumbles on a street theatre group run by a reformed dacoit named Sidhu, (Pankaj Kapur) who makes good use of the medium to reform and awaken the masses, and joins it. However, Ashfaque struggles to give a creative vent to the actor in him. He realizes that becoming a big film star is his real goal and is determined to get a break in movies.

He soon gets a part to play and is also given a new screen name – Sameer Khan. In time, he acquires better roles and starts to climb the showbiz ladder very quickly. He, almost immediately, gets renowned as an actor of finesse; one who can easily get under the skin of every character and compel the audience to applaud.

Thanks to all the adulation and applause, he gradually loses his own identity and starts to imbibe all the characters he essayed on screen. His eyes open to the corruption that takes over his entire system but by then he already feels alienated from his loved ones, especially Sneha (Vidya Balan) his wife. An outrageous event at a party shocks him and he is instantly caught between himself on one side and his tainted superstar image on the other. Whether he emerges as a true life hero and combats the persisting evil is entirely up to him. What will he do?
